Virtual Speech Protocol

We want your experience at this tournament to be awesome! One of the best ways to ensure that is to know what is expected of you as a competitor. The following Protocol will apply during this tournament:

General Protocol for Speech Events:

1. Students should stand to deliver their speeches.

2. Students will not be allowed to screen share during their speeches.

3. Students should proceed immediately to their competition rooms once postings are up. If you are in the top half of the postings list for your room, you should have completed your speech by the end of the first hour of the round unless you are cross-entered in multiple events. Students who fail to come to their assigned competition room before the last 15 minutes of the round may not have time to compete. Late arrival in the absence of having multiple events in a round is unacceptable. If you are having technical difficulties, you must notify the tournament at the beginning of the round. We will not allow the tournament to run late due to students procrastinating speech delivery.

4. Timing of Speeches:

  • Timing will be done by one of the judges in the room. This will be the official time and will be shared with the competitor and the other judges at conclusion of the speech.
  • Students should have a timer that they start at the beginning of their speech and have within easy eyesight so that they can be aware of their time while delivering their speech.

Limited Prep Events:

1. The room Host will administer the draw and prep time for Apologetics, Mars Hill, and Impromptu.

2. For Extemp, the following protocol will be used:

  • Students will be emailed their three topic choices at the beginning of their Extemp Draw Time per the postings. If the tournament is running late, an update will be posted on the Announcements tab.
  • You will be let into the Prep room one minute before the start of your prep time. As you enter the prep room, please rename yourself and list your speaker position, name. Ex: Craig Smith, 3
  • Student cameras should be on at all times in the prep room.
  • When you are let into the prep room, do not start researching until you are told to begin.
  • Competitors should communicate immediately with the Extemp Room Proctor if they did not receive or cannot open their emailed topics.
  • You may not leave until you are dismissed by the proctor so that your judges have enough time to write on their ballots.
  • You will be given a two minute warning so you can get to your competition room.

Two Important Notes:

1. All Stoa Speech rules should be followed at this tournament in the same way they would be at an in-person tournament.

2. Competitors may not receive or access any verbal, non-verbal, electronic, and/or written communication, nor any form of visual assistance during the preparation and/or delivery of the speech.
